이 항목은 각국에서 건조한 전함(Battleship)을 배수량 순과 시기별로 기재하는 하는 항목이다. 전함은 시기별로 불리는 이름이 다르다. 1860년 이전에는 주로 전열함(ship of the line)이라고 불렸다. 1800년대 후반기에는 장갑전함(ironclad warship)이 출현했으며 제1차 세계대전 직전에는 드레드노트급(노급)이라는 것이 탄생했다. 프리 드레드노트급(전노급)은 노급이 생겨나며 탄생한 군함 등급으로 드레드노트급에 이르지 못하는 군함을 칭한다. 제2차 세계대전에 이르러서야 현대에 전함이라 생각하는 5만톤 전후의 군함이 탄생한다. 순양전함 또는 전투순양함이라는 함급은 이 항목에서 제외한다.
