영국의 음악잡지 NME에서 500개의 음반을 선정해 만든 리스트이다. 2013년에 공개되었으며, NME의 전현직 집필진들의 투표를 통해 선정되었다.
여러모로 파격적인 리스트라고 할 수 있는데, 발매된지 5년도 되지 않은 2010년대 앨범들이 다수 포함되었으며, 익히 알려진 60-80년대 고전들 중 상당수가 이례적일 정도로 높거나 낮은 순위를 받았으며 실험적인 음악들을 포함하여 다양한 장르들이 리스트에 포함되었다. 물론 영국 인디 록에 대한 NME 사랑은 어디 안가서, NME의 총애를 받는 영국 아티스트들이 큰 푸쉬를 받아 편향적이라고 비판받는다.

2. 비판
만약 로라 스네이프(NME 평론가)가 그녀의 희망을 반영 했다면, 탑4는 모두 영국 앨범일 것입니다.

더 스미스의 The Queen Is Dead가 역사상 가장 위대한 앨범이라네요. 이 앨범이 비틀즈가 발매한 어떠한 음반보다 최고라는겁니다. 한편 퀸은 리스트에도 없군요. 반면 퀸즈 오브 더 스톤 에이지는 명단에 세번 나오는군요. 또 이 리스트의 하이라이트는 오아시스의 Definitely Maybe, PJ 하비의 Let England Shak, 아케이드 파이어의 Funeral이 마이 블러디 발렌타인의 Loveless보다 순위가 높다는 것, 아웃캐스트의 Stankonia가 500위 밖에 되지 않다는 점이네요. 더 이상한점을 말해보죠. 마이클 잭슨의 앨범 중 가장 높은 순위에 오른 앨범 Thriller가 131위인데 반면에, LCD 사운드시스템의 Sound of Silver는 49위로 탑 50을 돌파했네요. 또한 고작 발매된지 1개월된 악틱 몽키스의 AM(449위)이 이미 빅 스타의 Third (451위)를 능가했네요.

스테레오검의 평론가 마이클 넬슨은 상위 3개의 앨범은 좋은 선택이라고 말했지만 나머지는 걸어다니는 악몽이라고 평가했다. 다분히 영국적인, 또한 NME적인 주관적 취향이 심하게 반영되었다는 평. 이는 미국적 취향, 리버럴 성향의 히피 세대 취향이 짙다고 비판 받는 롤링 스톤 선정 500대 명반과 비슷한 구석이 있다.

[1] 롤링 스톤의 순위에서 5장이 선정된 U2는 NME에서는 단 1장의 앨범만을 424위(The Joshua Tree)에 올리는 데 그쳤고, 롤링 스톤 순위에서 밴드와 솔로 활동을 합쳐서 총 7장이 선정된 에릭 클랩튼은 NME에서는 코빼기도 안 보인다. 롤링 스톤에서 한때 1위로 선정한 비틀즈의 Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band는 NME에서는 87위에 불과하다. 핑크 플로이드 최고의 역작 The Dark Side of the Moon은 132위에 그쳤다. 그리고 그 바로 위인 131위에는 대중음악의 패러다임을 바꾼, 역사상 가장 중요한 앨범 중 하나로 꼽히는 마이클 잭슨의 Thriller가 있다. 이 리스트가 욕먹는 가장 주된 이유다. 대신 카녜 웨스트의 MBDTF, 우탱-클랜 1집, 나스의 일매틱 등이 꽤 높은 순위를 받았고, 다프트 펑크의 Discovery를 100위권 내에 선정했다.[2] NME 웹페이지에는 De Stiji로 잘못 표기되어있다.
