런던데리의 아리아[1]
북아일랜드 런던데리 일대에서 전해져 오는 민요이자 북아일랜드의 비공식 국가.
영국의 법조인이자 작사가인 '프레더릭 웨덜리'가 이 곡의 멜로디에 새로 가사를 붙인 Danny Boy를 발표하여 세계구급 인지도를 얻었다. 우리나라에서는 '아! 목동아'로 번안하여 발표. You Raise Me Up은 이 곡을 개작한 것이다.
대략적인 내용은 전쟁 혹은 반란에 가담하러 집을 떠나는 자식을 보내는 부모의 심정을 노래했다는 설이 대표적이며, 1918년에 발굴된 가사에서 Danny Boy의 여성 버전인 'Eily Dear' 또한 만들어진걸 보아 사랑 노래이며, 남자들이 부를 떄는 Eily Dear, 여자가 부를때는 원본대로 Danny Boy라고 불러야 한다는 설도 있다.
