14세기 인사말로 God be with ye[1](신이 당신과 함께 하기를)란 표현이 있는데, 16세기부터 서신에 이것을 God-b’wye로 줄여쓰기 시작했다. 이것이 Good day, Good evening 등의 인사말에 영향을 받아서 Good-b’wy 등으로 변형되었으며, 최종적으로 goodbye로 굳어진 것. 가장 오래된 기록은 영국의 작가 Gabriel Harvey가 1573년에 쓴 편지에서 발견되었다.
