67,000명의 병력을 보유한 아시아 유수의 해군국가이다.[* 사실 인도해군의 역사를 찾아보면 창설연도가 1612년도로 나오는데 [[영국 동인도 회사]]의 해군이 창설된 연도를 쓰기 때문이다.] 전력규모면에서 인도 해군은 [[아시아]]에서는 중국-일본과 더불어 3대 해군국으로 평가 받는데 특히 [[항공모함]]을 이용한 해상 전투를 두 차례나 치룬 경험이 있어 영국제 시킹 조기경보 시스템을 사용할 수 있음에도 불구하고 러시아제 Ka-31 조기경보헬기를 구매하는 식으로 양 진영의 무기를 혼용한다는 점이 있다. 또한, 아시아에서는 [[SSBN]](전략원잠)인 아리한트급 핵잠수함을 중국 다음으로 자체 개발한 후 2009년 실전배치한 국가이기도 하다. 전략원잠 호위용으로는 러시아에서 [[슈카B/바스급]] 1척을 해군함대 사령부와 직통으로 연결되어 있으며 지휘체계 역시 그와 동일하다. 인도 해군은 서부-동부-남부 해군사령부를 구성하며 각 해군함대사령부의 사령관의 계급은 중장이다. 주력함대로서의 역할은 동부함대로서 해군 내 최대 규모를 자랑한다. 하지만 서부함대 역시 항공모함과 같은 대양해군 함대를 주축으로 하고 있어서 동부-서부함대가 각각 주력함대이자 병기인 항공 모함과 [[SSN]]의 임대는 인도와 러시아의 관계가 보통 사이가 아니라는 것을 보여준다. 또한 차기의 도입을 하려고 준비중인 [[비크라마디티야함]]도 러시아의 항모다. 인도가 최근에 도입한 원자력 잠수함인 네르파급은 원래 러시아의 [[슈카B/바스급]]이였다. 그뿐이 아니다. 인도가 자체 개발했거나 현지형으로 개조한 군함들의 80% 이상은 원래
